Manon Lescaut from Giacomo Puccini received thirty curtain calls at the behest of enthusiastic audiences and critics. It was with this work that Puccini revealed himself 124 years ago on the very same stage of the Teatro Regio Turino as an operatic composer on a par with Verdi.
Puccini is fascinated by the destiny of a woman whose sensuality and boundless energy he showcases in the passionate search for life’s pleasures. He writes: “Manon is a heroine I believe in”, and presents to us a Manon who is provocative and fiercely attached to luxury and love, two à priori incompatible goals. Manon dies “sola, perduta, abbandonata in landa desolata” and makes us think of another fallen woman, Violetta. A homage to Verdi, perhaps.
